• Astronomy Night

Nights of wondering at the universe and wandering in the universe through the eyes of our telescopes, the hands of our astronomy nighthawks and the words of our astronomer.

IUB Astronomy Night

Celebrating nights in the age of city lights

On 9 March 2023, Dr. Tanweer Hasan, the Vice Chancellor of IUB, announced the beginning of astronomy nights at IUB. ARGI organizes these nights of stargazing and astronomy discussion on a regular basis. The stargazing typically happens on the roof of the academic building of IUB with a couple of telescopes gifted to IUB for the Durbin program by Dr. Lamiya Mowla, a Bangladeshi astronomer working in Canada. These events are usually open to people of all ages and background, but some events are also held specifically for IUB students, faculty and staff.

During the astronomy nights, you can participate in stargazing with the help of our ‘astronomy nighthawks’ (undergraduate students) and ask a professional astronomer your questions about the universe.

The Telescopes

The telescopes have been gifted to IUB by Dr. Lamiya Mowla, a postdoctoral fellow of Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Toronto. They are mainly used for Durbin, an astronomy outreach program of Dunlap Institute and IUB. Dunlap has provided telescopes and financial grants to IUB for the program and IUB has provided local facilities under an agreement signed between Dunlap and the Center for Computational and Data Sciences, IUB. The customs duty for bringing the telescopes to IUB has been provided by the Department of Physical Sciences of IUB. ARGI is grateful to everyone for this productive intra-university and inter-national collaboration.

Ask an Astronomer

Khan Asad did his PhD in radio astronomy from the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, University of Groningen, and postdoctoral research at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) before joining the Department of Physical Sciences of IUB as an assistant professor in 2020. He started observational astronomy research and teaching in Bangladesh for the first time by establishing ARGI in 2020. He is usually present during astronomy nights at IUB and answers questions about the universe.

IUB Astronomy Night III

Regular Astronomy Nights (stargazing events) are beginning at IUB starting from this Thursday. You will get the chance to take images of the sky using a Unistellar eQuinox telescope and see the images on a large monitor at the Digital Classroom…

IUB Astronomy Night I

The first IUB Astronomy Night was on 9 March 2023. Please see the poster of the event below.
