Hiring: Manager (Science)

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong science and computing background to work as the Science Manager of CASSA. The Manager will be based at the CASSA office and will work under the supervision of the Director, in coordination with the Core Members of CASSA. Serving as the primary point of contact, the Manager will oversee all administrative activities and procedures related to CASSA, both within IUB and in dealings with external entities. The role requires a blend of scientific and technical expertise, as responsibilities include managing research funds and maintaining a computing server.
In addition to core managerial responsibilities, the Manager will have the opportunity to participate in research under the guidance of CASSA’s Core or Associate Members. Hence, the position also offers a strong career pathway for individuals seeking to pursue PhDs or to advance professionally as scientists, researchers, or executives in science and technology industries.
Position details
- Duration: 2-year contractual position with the possibility of future extensions upon performance.
- Working schedule: Full-time; every weekday (Sun–Thu), approx. 40 hours per week, 160 hours per month.
- Working mode: Only on-site.
Responsibilities
- Drafting and managing the official documents of CASSA
- Managing the annual budget of CASSA
- Collaborating with Principal Investigators (PIs) to oversee the disbursement of research funds
- Coordinating the activities of research assistants, interns, and students on duty (SOD) at CASSA
- Administering CASSA’s high-performance computing server on Ubuntu Server, including managing user quotas, installing software, and performing system upgrades
- Optionally, conduct research with a core or associate member of CASSA
Required education
Master’s degree (MSc) in any of the following fields: Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and/or Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering.
Required computing skills
- Proficiency in scientific computing, preferably using Python and Bash.
- Experience working with UNIX-based operating systems, preferably Ubuntu Server.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and AI-assisted tools (e.g., Google Sheets, Docs, Forms, Colab, Gemini, ChatGPT).
Experience
Demonstrated experience in project management and in data-intensive research will be a strong advantage, with preference given to research related to astronomy, astrophysics, or space science.
