4. Detecting cold fronts in the x-ray images of galaxy clusters
Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound structures in the universe and they are the building blocks of the cosmic web. Some galaxy clusters show an interesting interaction between two types of intergalactic gas, one emitting x-ray and the other radio. If the radio emitting zones are located at the center of the cluster, they are called radio minihalos. Some of these minihalos are bound by cold fronts created by the x-ray emitting gas. In this project, we will create brightness and temperature maps of galaxy clusters using publicly available observations and then detect cold fronts in the images using advanced image-processing techniques.
