3. Modeling the directional sensitivity of SKA antennas
Radio astronomy opened a new electromagnetic window to the universe for the first time in almost 3,000 years of astronomy. More and more sensitive and high-resolution radio telescopes are being built every decade. It is important to understand the directional sensitivity of these telescopes simply because we must know how well the telescopes sees toward different direction in the sky. In this project, student will use EveryBeam to simulate the sensitivity (radiation) patterns, called primary beams, of the largest radio telescopes in the world and try to model them using mathematical functions.
