CASSA is a research center of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) founded by astronomer Dr. Khan Asad. Operating autonomously from any individual school or department, it also coordinates educational activities and engages in public outreach. Astronomy Research Group, IUB (ARGI), founded in mid-2020 by Asad, and its successor, the Computational and Observational Astronomy Lab (COALab), established in late 2023, are the predecessors of CASSA.

CASSA is constituted by Core Members who are faculty members of IUB in either astronomy or theoretical physics, and Associate Members who are either faculty members of IUB from subjects other than astronomy and physics or postdocs and faculty members of astronomy and astrophysics working in countries other than Bangladesh.
