Deep-sky-gazing from IUB roof
Astronomy Nights are ‘open house’ or ‘open nights’ where visitors are invited to the roof of the Academic Building of IUB for stargazing and discussion and Q&A sessions on astronomy and astrophysics. Trained undergraduate students called ‘astronomy nighthawks‘ operate the telescopes and show deep-sky objects to the guests including star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.
During the first astronomy night on 9 March 2023, the Vice Chancellor of IUB Dr. Tanweer Hasan announced the beginning of regular astronomy nights and Dr. Muhammed Zafar Iqbal inaugurated the Durbin program jointly conducted by IUB and Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics.
দূরবিন: দূর বিশ্বের নাগরিক
Durbin is an astronomy outreach program initiated by Dr. Lamiya Mowla from the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Toronto, Canada. The program has selected a group of university students (also called Durbin: citizens of the universe) who will travel around Bangladesh to do astrophotography of planets, nebula, stars, galaxies, and other exciting astronomical objects. They will share their images and stories with everyone to raise awareness about the Universe in which we live.
The program was inaugurated on 9 March 2023 during an event at IUB Auditorium. After the inauguration, the volunteers went to a remote dark location for taking their first images and participating in their first workshop conducted by Dr. Mowla and Dr. Asad.
Space and Astronomy for Development and Education
SPADE is an educational and developmental program of COALab conducted with the help of BDOAA (Bangladesh Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics), and Youthpreneur Network (YPN), a non-government youth organization. It aims to use astronomy as a tool for better education at high-schools and colleges and for social development. The two initiatives of SPADE are aligned with the offices of Astronomy for Education and Astronomy for Development at the International Astronomical Union (IAU). We do not have any connections with IAU but aim to connect in future.
